SouthData is currently accepting applications for the SDI Scholars program, which provides a scholarship in Computer Information Technology from Surry Community College, along with on-the-job training at the company.

SouthData is an innovative billing and communications expert specializing in data management, high-quality variable printing, and mailing services for thousands of clients across the United States.

SouthData produces billing statements, payment coupon books, newsletters, and marketing materials from its manufacturing facility in Mount Airy.

SouthData created the SDI Scholars program as a solution to the company’s recruitment needs.

“Finding candidates with the right computer training is always a challenge,” said SouthData President John Springthorpe, III. “We saw a partnership with Surry Community College through the SDI Scholars program as a way to increase the pool of qualified applicants and to help area youth find fulfilling career paths.”

“Our goal is to create a rigorous academic program that is enhanced by their work experience,” Springthorpe added.

The SDI Scholars program was introduced in the spring of 2008. Justin Puckett, a graduate of Mount Airy High School, was named the first SDI Scholar.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Puckett. “It’s a great place to work, and I have enjoyed it a lot. I really like the on-the-job training. It has helped me excel with my school projects.”

Puckett has performed computer installations and fixed hardware and software problems while doing his paid internship at SouthData. Applicants for the SDI Scholars program must be accepted into Surry Community College, as well as be approved by an interview panel for employment at SouthData.

Successful graduates of the program will have the opportunity to compete for computer technology positions at SouthData as programmers, data specialists, sales engineers or applications specialists.

Applications are currently being accepted for the Fall 2009 semester. The deadline for applications is May 11.
